All CCI’s CTU’s operations are carried out from the control cabin via a combination of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls. The skid-mounted control cabin and power pack is designed for compactness and quick rig up time for offshore applications.
SKID ASSEMBLY
The unit’s complete control cabin, power unit and auxiliary items are installed on a single heavy-duty steel master skid assembly. This master skid features a single-point spreader bar lift system and offshore type crash frame with removable access bars. All connections to and from the skid terminate within the skid frame at a reasonable distance from the exterior of the skid. All hoses (where applicable) are separated from the drip pans with support clamps to facilitate skid cleaning.
Some other features of the skid include:
- A control cabin access ladder integrated into the crash frame;
- Two 6” tall x 12” wide forklift slots;
- A seal-welded drip pan with a 2” connection for draining fluids integrated into the skid base for pollution control;
- Safety glass main windscreen for collision mitigation;
- One-way safety catches, to avoid a rapid cabin descent (possible MAE pathway);
- Internal air conditioning / heating unit;
- A fibre-gate roof built into the crash frame above the power unit.
CONTROL CABIN
Other than the cabin lift system and power hose reel controls, which are operated from local controls, all the unit’s operations are carried out from the control cabin via mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls.
The single piece cabin is approximately 7ft wide, 8ft deep, and 6-1/2ft tall. It is constructed with a steel frame with an aluminium outer cover and comes lined and fully insulated. There are two side locking doors with windows, and a large front window with protective safety glass. The front window is equipped with a windshield wiper and a collapsible, pneumatic, metal sun-visor/windshield cover and support system.
Four hydraulic lift cylinders with a minimum telescoping height of 30 inches are installed at the bottom corners of the cabin. The control valve for the lift cylinders is located below the cabin on the side of the chassis for easy access during job rig up. Before raising the cabin, 4 automatically deployed, emergency cabin descent restraints are fitted to the frame so the cabin cannot collapse in the event personnel are working below the cabin and there is a rapid cabin descent. The potential for this event was identified and engineered out, during the risk assessment process.
Installed on each side of the cabin are ladders to facilitate access to the cabin doors when the cabin is elevated. All hydraulic connections to and from the control cabin are collected at a stainless steel removable hydraulic manifold. Connection numbers are permanently engraved into the manifold. The cabin’s removable front panel allows access to all the control panel’s hydraulic connections.
Standard Control Console
The control console is mounted on a housing that incorporates the backup pump, hydraulic valves, interface, etc. Among the controls and gauges installed on this control console are:
- Engine Controls and Display
- Injector Controls and Gauges
- BOP Controls and Gauges (shielded)
- Auxiliary System Controls and Gauges
- Stripper Controls
- Tubing Reel Controls
- Backup Controls
Power Unit
This unit’s power system consists of a diesel engine, a fuel system, and a hydraulic system.
Diesel Engine
A Detroit Diesel Series 60 turbocharged diesel engine rated at 350 bhp at 2100 rpm is installed on the skid behind the control cabin. General specifications are included below.
Fuel System
The power unit’s fuel system consists of Detroit Diesel fuel pump and filters, and a 60-gallon fuel tank complete with fuel level indicator, air breather cap, suction filters and return filters. The system is complete with all necessary valves and filters including an external fuel source hook up.
Hydraulic System
Mounted on the rear of the diesel engine is a two-place pump drive that powers the following hydraulic systems.
- Main Hydraulic System
- Auxiliary hydraulic system
- Hand pump system
- Accumulator system
- Hydraulic oil filtration
- Jumper hoses
